Today I discuss the song Nearer Still Nearer written by Lelia N. Morris. This song holds a special place in my heart because I grew up singing this song at my home congregation, Pennington Bend church of Christ in Nashville, TN. This song was a favorite of the minister, W.K. Johnson and he regularly requested it be sung at out 5th Sunday singings.
- Nearer, still nearer, close to Thy heart,
Draw me, my Savior—so precious Thou art!
Fold me, oh, fold me close to Thy breast;
Shelter me safe in that “haven of rest”;
Shelter me safe in that “haven of rest.”
- Nearer, still nearer, nothing I bring,
Naught as an off’ring to Jesus, my King;
Only my sinful, now contrite heart,
Grant me the cleansing Thy blood doth impart;
Grant me the cleansing Thy blood doth impart.
- Nearer, still nearer, Lord, to be Thine!
Sin, with its follies, I gladly resign,
All of its pleasures, pomp and its pride,
Give me but Jesus, my Lord crucified;
Give me but Jesus, my Lord crucified.
- Nearer, still nearer, while life shall last,
Till safe in glory my anchor is cast;
Through endless ages ever to be
Nearer, my Savior, still nearer to Thee;
Nearer, my Savior, still nearer to Thee!
The song’s melody is beautifully mesmerizing and offers an exceptional arrangement for the heartfelt lyrics. Each verse expands on the dependance and desire to draw near to God. The song emphasizes the humble heart of a child of God and the safety, comfort, and freedom that is found in the closeness to God.
The song’s concept and lyrics are inspired by several scriptural references.
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart– These, O God, You will not despise.” Psalms 51:17
“You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:8
When I hear or sing this song, I am very mindful of the dependance I have on my God. The lyrics focus my heart and mind on the need that I have for my Savior and the gift that He offers me.
