Count Your Blessings

The song “Count Your Blessings” was written by Johnson Oatman in 1897. The song is a wonderful reminder of the many blessings from God. The song’s verses recollect the troubles and tribulations of life, but each verse ends with the reminder to focus on the Lord’s blessings rather than the turmoils of this life.

  1. When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
    When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
    Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
    And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
    • Refrain:
      Count your blessings, name them one by one,
      Count your blessings, see what God has done!
      Count your blessings, name them one by one,
      Count your many blessings, see what God has done.
  2. Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
    Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
    Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
    And you will keep singing as the days go by.
  3. When you look at others with their lands and gold,
    Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
    Count your many blessings—money cannot buy
    Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
  4. So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
    Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
    Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
    Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

This song has been a favorite of mine since I was child. No matter what is going on in my life, singing this song makes my heart glad and reminds me to focus on “what the Lord has done.”

While the song offers a simplistic message, you can see that Oatman drew from scriptures to write the beautiful lyrics.

“Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation! Selah.” Psalms 68:19

“giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Ephesians 5:20

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18-19

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” James 1:17

“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” James 1:2-4

In life, we can become so preoccupied with the drudgery of life. We can fall into the trap of focusing on our hardships and struggles. But, this song prompts us to be mindful of the blessings God bestows upon us during those difficult times. When the stress of life becomes overwhelming, the simple concept of ‘counting your blessings’ can be empowering for a child of God. Focusing on the blessings from God allows us to change our outlook and attitude about life.

I hope that next time you sing this song, you feel the impact of remembering God’s blessings can be seen in every stiuation.

Lots of love to you and yours.

Until next time
