Believe in yourself is a piece of advice that we often hear. It is one that I’ve said to myself and others. As I thought more about this statement, I wondered if that mindset is biblical. Trusting in yourself certainly contradicts what the bible teaches. (Proverbs 3:5-6). We are warned about the dangers of pride (Proverbs 16:18). But is believing in yourself wrong? Does “believe in yourself” align with God’s Word? While some may disagree with me, I do think you can see the concept of “believe in yourself” throughout scriptures. Of course like all things, this concept can also be used as a tool by the devil and lead us to a mindset that relies on ourselves which makes it even more important to understand the scriptures that reinforce this thought. Remembering that it is with God only that we can have true confidence in ourselves and our abilities.
If you put your life in God’s hands then belief in yourself really means belief in God’s will for your life. It is through Him, because of Him and with Him that you are able.
“A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9
Believe in yourself should mean:
Believing in the abilities and talents God has given to you.
“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:10-11
Believing in the strength that God gives you.
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
“But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”
Believing in the knowledge that God bestows upon you.
“For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;” Proverbs 2:6
Believing in yourself because you are His creation.
“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:26-27
Believing in yourself when you have armed yourself according to the scriptures.
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:10-14
Believing in yourself because you abide in Jesus Christ.
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5
Believing in yourself because you trust in the Lord.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
God has given us abilities, talents, strength, intelligence, and wisdom and He expects us to have confidence in what He has given us. It is important for us to remember we have a part to do and having the confidence to do it is necessary. Belief in yourself should be you believing in the power that God has given to you. God wants us to do our part and remember our strength is found in Him.
“Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11
